Yummy

The other day, Tim had lunch at a roadside stand/restaurant near our church. As he stepped onto the sidewalk after lunch, he felt something collide with his leg. In quick succession, he felt a scratching and a scrambling. He gathered his wits and looked down in time to see a rat of substantial girth scurrying along the sidewalk. Dessert, anyone?

4 Months and Counting

Our little guy is well over 4 months old, and I thought that his fans far and wide really deserved an update on him. I think that how he's doing, in my mind, is all tied up with our transition, and, ultimately, how I'm doing. Julian is, all in all, a very healthy and happy little one. He's had some challenges, chiefly his eczema, which I think has been harder for me because of the general lack of control and stability that I have felt in the last couple of months. It has also been much harder for me to get a handle on what he needs in terms of routine, which is always a challenge with a new baby, but is also a function both of our high level of transition since his birth and simply the fact that he was born into an already bustling family.

In his first three months, the child went to Disney World and traveled internationally to 3 major cities (one of these days I should post some Europe pictures...), and he's visited both the mountains and the beach in Thailand in the month and a half since we've returned! All of this has been great fun, but I have a pretty high need for routine, and believe that structure is good for little ones, so I've resolved to buckle down for the next week and not go anywhere that will inhibit Julian's daytime sleep, so that he can begin to establish some more regular patterns of sleeping and eating that will allow him to get the nourishment that his body needs. I know that it's unrealistic to think that he won't ever miss a nap, and I'm not that highly structured, but I think that in general he needs what he needs...

So, on to more interesting matters. At his 4 month checkup, our baby was 27.4 inches, which is off the charts for height, and 15.3 pounds, which is at the 50th percentile for weight. This is a drop in his weight percentile, so we're monitoring that closely, and solid foods are just around the corner.

Julian is nothing short of a joy, ready with a smile when it's asked of him and a constant source of amusement to his brother and sister. He drools in unbelievable quantities, and goes through 5 or 6 onesies on most days because they're so wet. He's beginning to take more consistent naps during the day and his night sleep tends to consist of a stretch of up to 6 hours, with one or two wakings to eat. I was reading a journal recently and read that Asa was sleeping 12 hours a night at this point! To each his own, and for the most part I'm happy to meet Julian's needs (okay, I might occasionally be just a little grumpy as I stumble to his crib at 3 am...), and I know that my other marathon sleepers were not necessarily the norm.

His eczema has been a constant source of concern (and many trips to the doctor!) and has caused me no end of consternation. I've eliminated dairy from my diet for the past two weeks, as his pediatrician thinks there could be a milk allergy involved, and we've been hydrating his skin constantly. He actually looked MUCH better today, which was very good for my spirits, and that gives me hope that things might be better ahead. We'll see. When your little one looks like a wee burn victim day in and day out, it's a bit disturbing. And, as I already said, add in all of my transition and lack of control issues, and it's put me fairly off my rocker. Today we received a shipment of some new laundry detergent we're trying that is supposed to be really great for sensitive skin (and cloth diapers), so I'm hopeful that it might prove a help, as well. By the way, all of these pictures were taken on Mother's Day, when his skin looked amazingly good, a lovely gift for me:).

All in all, we simply cannot imagine our family without our Julian. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

And finally...I have a number of pictures I love that I thought I would share here and there. Here's one taken during an early spring romp in Georgia...

Happenings

Our little girl just lost her tooth and has a HUGE new gap to show for it. Wow, it makes her look like a growing-up girl. We're struck so often with how quickly this is happening, and it tugs at our hearts and reminds us to try to enjoy every day, every moment. Tim and I were just talking today about how vital this cherishing of the small moments, the everyday with our children and one another, is, and just how hard it is when the day to day can be such a challenge. Something we're always striving toward, failing at, and getting just glimpses of clear joy as we seek to love one another with abandon.

Another marker of the passage of time is that our boy has graduated to a big boy bed. Tim did a lovely job of making it, and Asa and Emmy have been roomies for about a week now. The transition has gone much smoother than we expected, with minimal keeping each other awake and some sweet moments, such as yesterday morning when Tim went in and found them together in Emmy's bed reading a book. Ahhh...

So here's the big boy bed...

And here's the big boy enjoying his bed...

And Tim, always the creative one, decided to celebrate their first night together by making eye patches for the reading of Treasure Island (found in the Henry's house...thanks!). A good time was had by all the mateys.

Finally, our baby boy made the big move into his own room, which has been good for us all. Here he is enjoying his first night in his big crib. You can see his eczema here, sweet boy. It really comes and goes and is a constant battle, which can be distressing, but as you can also see, it doesn't dampen his spirits!

Smattering

There are new things afoot here at our house, and I was planning to share our latest milestones, but, as it turns out, Tim's out with the camera. So very soon. In the meantime, here are some random photos from the past couple of months that were slated to be blogged but never got their moment in the sun...

First, Disney, because I promised JJ I would post them and have not done so. We went in early March with Tim's whole family, and it was a great time, even with a 7 week old in tow. It's hard to believe that this fun adventure was 2 months ago; in many ways it seems like an entirely different world...

Asa meets Alice in Wonderland after a wild and crazy teacup ride

Princess Emmy meets Belle

Cousin Princesses

This is one of the few pictures sweet Julian is in- he literally slept through the entire trip. I think this guy's (girl's?) name is Jojo...

Tim and Emmy on Dumbo

The boys after a Braves' spring training game

The whole clan (minus Julian- sleeping!)

Next, a fun picture of Em in her jammies in downtown Decatur- we were going to a "cookies, milk and bedtime stories" evening at an adorable children's bookstore...this also seems like a very different world from where I'm sitting right now!

And finally, just for fun...

Chicks Dig Scars

Our Asa had his first trip to the emergency room Saturday night, and this title is my favorite facebook comment about it. Puts it all in perspective to know the girls will be swooning one day...

He and Emmy were playing a lively game of Asa-Runs-Past-The-Couch-At-Top-Speed-While-Emmy-Jumps-From-The-Couch-Into-Him. Perhaps not surprisingly, it ended in disaster, when Asa hurtled headlong into the corner of the rocking chair and began to bleed profusely above his eye. Tim's inner ER doctor came out in full force, and he began issuing orders involving towels and wet cloths. Asa was a model patient, allowing his wound to be cleaned and bandaged.

We ate dinner, and after determining that he most likely did need stitches because the cut was on his face, he and I headed to the hospital. Here he is on the hospital bed pre-stitches, with Daddy's homemade butterfly bandage and his faithful Dog. Never have I been more thankful for Dog than when Asa was swaddled in sheets with 5 Thai medical people holding him down while the doctor stitched his cut (they were very kind and skillful). My, was he a brave boy. And I was pretty brave, too, although I'm fairly certain that his tears were harder for me than they were for him. It's worth noting that this particular hospital is sketchy in its English proficiency, so a fair amount of our communication was done in Thai. I guess my adrenaline was working on my behalf!

And this is our big boy the next morning. I experienced a wee bit of anxiety when I saw his eye swollen practically shut. I put in a call to our inter-continental medical advice line (thanks, Gwen!), and was assured that he was not going to, in fact, lose his eye.

In other news, we made play-doh today, which was big fun.

I'm not sure why they're snuggling in this picture...
